Day 178: Cormorant on a Post, Pt. 3

Cormorant on Post (Watercolour)
Cormorant on Post (Watercolour)

It was fun to be a bit experimental today with the rusty posts in this picture. I only had an hour before going to watch our local team, the Newtown Jets, play rugby this afternoon in some glorious sunshine so I knew I couldn’t get too fiddly.

I’ve used Naples Yellow as a base, which is a bit opaque and so holds it’s colour when you add others to it. Into that I dropped mixes of Burnt Umber and Light Red, sometimes with a small amount of Ultramarine Blue or Carmine for more intensity. While it was still a little wet I sprinkled some table salt in, which drew out out the colour as it dried and gave a lovely speckled effect, like the rust has overtaken the original cream paint.

Unfortunately, now the posts look much more detailed than the water, so I might have to try and adjust things a bit. I think I’ll finish them first and add the cormorant in before I decide.
