I’m beginning to love how much detail you can suggest with the tiniest mark… I think I began to realise this a couple of days ago with the sneaky dog on the sofa and the past two days it has really come to my attention while I’ve been sketching. If you zoom in you can see that the detail of this pretty child’s jumper is nothing more than dots, and many other marks are hardly a scrape of the graphite stick on the paper.
Today I spent 20 minutes sketching at work and was really happy with her mouth and eye area. Then tonight when I came to finish the picture I managed to ‘break’ it because the bottom lip wasn’t quite right. In moments with a touch of the pencil the shape was gone. The same with her eye, I wanted a little more shadow and suddenly she was a panda! Thank goodness for putty rubbers, mine has had a real workout this evening. I managed some tiny corrections and stopped quick before I did more damage. Even now there is no detail in at all her eye, and yet it definitely looks like an eye – not as much as it did a few hours ago, but even so 😛 It’s very exciting!
