My Chinese winter landscape is now beginning to take form… after today’s class it’s come on a long way and the page is filled in the traditional linear perspective style that is so often used in Chinese landscape. Actually, in this instance it doesn’t look very different from natural Western style perspective.
Next week these initial grey washes will start to have colour added – Indigo on the sea & sky and a reddish brown on the trees and rocks. I like how the dark washes on various areas are used to make the ‘snow’ stand out on the land. The Chinese painting process seems strange after watercolour, where black is rarely used at all, but it does seem to work.
I wish I could get my trees working better though, I always have trouble with them and just can’t get the branches to go right. They look like diagrams of arteries or something 😛 (more practise needed!)
