Irises (Chinese Spontaneous Style)

Down at the bottom of my garden are some random clumps of Iris. In amongst a messy and overgrown border of Mondo grass and bromeliads, they are the most beautiful velvet like shades of purple & black. Most of the year you wouldn’t realise they were there, then for just two weeks they flower…

Using the lessons we’ve learnt in our Chinese Painting classes I’ve tried to paint them in the Spontaneous Style. It was hard to match the colours and I found the stems very difficult to get right. I think I need to work a bit on both the colour and the shape of the stems, but I like the effect of the flower heads.
