Day 29: Yellow Hibiscus (not spontaneous this time)

I’m beginning to realise how much of my inspiration comes from my immediate neighbourhood and surroundings, things that I see every day while I’m walking the dog or fetching shopping. For instance, this yellow Hibiscus grows in someone’s front garden further up our street… and earlier today I was watching rainbow lorikeets feeding on the bottlebrush that’s so common around here – they’re noisy blighters, but definitely future subject matter. I can’t believe how lucky I am!

However, maybe it’s just a case of being engaged in your surroundings and appreciating the small things… I remember in my twenties heading out into Derbyshire with Dad, looking for something to sketch. We would drive around for ages and not see anything ‘special’ enough to be worthy of capturing,  and yet it’s the most beautiful scenery. Perhaps we were just looking too big, searching for the epic landscape while overlooking a million smaller masterpieces.
