Day 67: Stone Boulder, Part Two

Stone Boulder (Watercolour)
Stone Boulder (Watercolour)

The trip to the Hunter Valley already seems like weeks ago… I’m now working from a photograph I took of this boulder and finding that it’s much harder to judge the depths of the shadows, and the colours and values. You would expect that it would be easier once it’s reduced to two dimensions, but photos seem to lose, or flatten, the amount of information you’d get by looking at the actual object.

Sometimes that might be quite useful – it might have made the complexity of the valley view easier – however, this subject has lost a lot of it’s three dimensionality and I’m finding myself trying to decipher all the variations of grey in a flat looking rock. It’s slow work, especially reaching the right intensity for the shadows, but I think that slightly over emphasising the colours in the photo is working.
