A couple of weeks ago Jim & I walked down to Marrickville for breakfast and next to the cafe there was a kiddies zoo with a variety of beautiful cuddly animals. Curled up in the sunshine right in the middle was a gorgeous young alpaca, all fluffy and soft, with big eyes and enormous eyelashes.
I’m pretty sure I will never feel the time is right to try and paint him (or her?) as soft fur has to be one of the biggest challenges ever, but somehow it just appealed to me today. I think, as much as anything, it was the opportunity to choose a completely different palette of colours that enticed me to try this.
I’m already having trouble just getting the sketch right… I don’t want to damage the paper but the nose area and nostril has been redrawn several times and still isn’t right. The eye might be a bit big too – and I haven’t even begun to wonder how I paint fur!
