An Unexpected Wave (Watercolour)
An Unexpected Wave (Watercolour)

A touch more colour to the figure today – more shading on his t-shirt and to his skin… I’m still not confident about painting the face, as you can tell, it’s getting left behind! I did add a little shading to that area, but it needs to go darker still to build the contrast and look more realistic. This area is also being made more difficult by the fact I’m using rough paper and it’s relatively small, so every brush stroke has to climb mountains and valleys – rough paper is great for texture in wild seas but not so much fun for smooth faces!

On the subject of sea I also noted while I was studying the photo that each splash has it’s own shady side, so I’ve been adding neutral grey areas here and there to represent the farthest sides of splashes from the sun. I think it’s working quite well so far. The underside of the waves might also need darkening though, just to bring some more contrast to the white foamy tops.
