Day 130: Inspired by the Beat – Flamenco Rose

A very quick update tonight – after watching a great Dr. Who finale and then diving straight into the Eurovision Song Contest I seem to have lost the whole evening.  Now it’s 11.30pm and they’ve only just started voting! Luckily we can pause it while I write a few words…

Following yesterday’s Project Contemporary Artspace exhibition announcement I’ve done lots of painting today towards the theme of ‘Inspired by the Beat’. Starting with thumbnail sketches I did half a dozen trial watercolour squares to pick colours and get some idea of technique. This picture is about 12 inches square, about a half size ‘rough’ to see if it all worked before I started on a larger version.

It’s not finished, but I decided to crack on with the large one as I only had the one day to finish. The new one is almost finished but it’s too big to scan and too difficult to photograph in artificial light so this is the best I can show you. I love the smoothness of this one, the new version is on a rougher paper and I wasn’t so cautious with it so it’s quite different. I started them both by wetting the paper in loose circles and then randomly dropping Pthalo Blue paint into the swirls. The folds and drapes were then built from shapes suggested in the first wash.
