Day 143: Dancer Sketch

I only had a short time today to spend on creating, and again was unsure what to tackle… so a quick look through my inspiration folder drew me to a photo I picked up from Sydney Opera House recently of a dancer en pointe looking agile, and deceptively relaxed.

I did a light pencil sketch to guide me with this one as I’m not very experienced with the human figure, then I sketched over it with paint. Yesterday was such fun I wanted to try and capture the same amount of freedom – a combination of concentrating really hard on where the light is and then having fun putting strong paint directly on the paper, adding water to define shapes and shadows.

Again I was mostly happy, but the hair and face caused me lots of grief. Having spent the afternoon out I was surprised when I scanned it in that they don’t look nearly as bad as I expected. You can’t even tell how many times I painted and washed the face area 😛 It is something I definitely need to practice before (or as part of) doing more.

  1. Wow, Wow, I think this deserves. You can almost feel the tension of the pose through her body. and the great effort to hold it for a few beats. Wonderful.
