Day 85: Walking in Colour

Swing Walking (Watercolour)
Swing Walking (Watercolour)

Only a quick update this evening… the website server has been down for a while and I’ve been waiting for it to be mended to write.

It’s given me time to reflect on this watercolour sketch, done as a follow up to yesterday’s graphite sketch, and to realise how far I’ve progressed since I began this blog in January. The topic also came up this afternoon with Jim: a few months ago he’d only ever seen two paintings I’d done, both completed over 15 years ago.

This afternoon I sat for maybe 30 minutes and sketched this in. I think it’s the first figure I’ve ever painted. I wouldn’t say it was effortless, but there were fewer pencil strokes (and brush strokes) than I ever hoped for. More than that, I am happy with the overall effect – that would have been a very unexpected outcome three months ago.

I know it is said often, but I think you have to be there to understand… It’s amazing what a small amount of regular practice (and I do mean the minimum) can do to improve your skills – I look at this & almost don’t believe I did it. So get those paint out now, no excuses!

  1. How lovely to watch your development through your blog!
This “figure sketch” is something I would like to have achieved but only managed when they were lost in a painting.
    Brilliant!!
